The go-home show for the Blue brand proved to be an interesting and very important one as many questions regarding Survivor Series were answered as well as a twist. All this happening from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
WWE Champion, AJ Styles made his way to the ring to address the WWE Universe about his upcoming battle with WWE Universal Champ, Brock Lesnar. Styles was quickly interrupted by the Beast’s advocate, Paul Heyman. Heyman and the Champ traded vocal jabs with Heyman declaring that Styles is second-best in the world to Daniel Bryan. Styles says he doesn’t care to talk about Bryan and that he is sure he will make Lesnar tapout on Sunday. Bryan makes his way to the ring and says if AJ mentions his name one more time that he will punch the Champ in his face. The two brawl, leading to them being separated backstage by Smackdown commissioner, Shane McMahon. Shane-O’ Mac declares Styles vs. Bryan for the WWE Championship as the main event for the evening.
Next is Jeff Hardy vs. Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas. Almas was quciker than the old, veteran Hardy, but Hardy never went down. El Idolo walked into a Twist of Fate and then was hit with a Swanton Bomb as Hardy picked up the win.
Miz is shown backstage taking pride in being the lone captain of the men’s team at Survivor Series for Smackdown. Miz says he doesn’t want Rey Mysterio on the team and was only on the team becasue of Daniel Bryan and instead made Hardy the fifth member. GM Paige disagrees and says Miz must defeat Mysterio in a match next to kick him off the team. Miz dominated most of this match as he is the more powerful of the two, but Mysterio remained resilient and would not stay down. Rey tripped Miz and hit a 6-1-9 and went for the frog splash, however, the Miz got his knees up. Mysterio eventually rolled up the A-Lister to remain on the Survivor Series team. After the match, hometown boy, Randy Orton tried to hit Mysterio with an RKO but Mysterio was too quick and got out of the way. Orton hit the RKO on Miz instead to get a pop from his home crowd.
Paige makes her way to the ring and announces the entire Smackdown women’s division the ring. It was announced earlier in the show that Lynch would not be medically cleared to compete against Ronda Rousey Sunday at Survivor Series and that the Irish-Lasskicker would choose her replacement. Lynch obviously irked that she could not defeat Rousey herself, puts aside her differences with Charlotte Flair and chooses her to represent team Blue against Rousey on Sunday. Charlotte declared she would fight for her friend and make sure everyone knows Smackdown is the premiere brand.
A six man tag match between the New Day and Showbar was up next. Showbar isolated Woods early and wore him down. Woods eventually fought back and made a hot tag to his partner, Kofi Kingston. Cesaro and Kofi went back and forth and traded near-falls before the Big Show tagged in and hit Kingston with the K-O Punch to give Showbar a win over their rivals.
Time for the main event. Styles vs Bryan for the title. The live crowd was hot for both competitors as they made their entrances for the title bout. Early on, Styles went for the Calf Crusher, the move Bryan tapped out to two weeks ago. But Bryan had other ideas and targeted the left arm of the Champ. These two have tremendous chemistry and the match was fast paced from the opening bell. Bryan went for high impact with a series of huge moves to wear down Styles. Bryan gets Styles into the YES! Lock, with Styles barely escaping and eventually putting Bryan in another Calf Crusher. Bryan reverses this Calf Crusher into another YES! Locl with AJ again barely escaping and holding on for the time being. The Phenomenal One went for his Phenomenal Forearm only for the YES! Man to duck out of the way causing the ref to take the bump. Bryan low blows Styles behind the referee’s back and then his running knee finisher. After the knee, the ref counts 1,2,3 and we have a new WWE Champ in a surprising and shocking main event.
A solid and surprising go-home show for team Blue. The loss of Becky Lynch at Survivor Series is a disappointment, but Charlotte Flair vs Rousey should entertain. The new main event is set for Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar.
