At this point, I’m getting a little sick of the “Drew Brees is running away with the MVP” narrative.
I don’t even hate Drew Brees, hell, I like him a lot more than a lot of quarterbacks in the league.
I hate this idea that he’s been the best quarterback in the NFL this year.
Patrick Mahomes has been the best since Day 1 of the 2018 NFL season, and the stats back it up.
I get that the “old guy ripping up the league” is a feel-good story, but if that were the case, Tom Brady would be MVP for the last three years.
After Week 13, Mahomes has thrown ELEVEN more touchdown passes, and nearly 700 more yards than Brees.
Yes, Brees owns the better completion percentage and has fewer interceptions.
But Mahomes throws for more yards per attempt, and leads ESPN’s Total QBR at 85.5. For comparison’s sake, Tom Brady finished his unbelievable 2007 run at 88.5.
The only stat that Brees leads is fewer interceptions thrown. But honestly, aggressive wins in today’s NFL. I can live with Mahomes giving the ball to the other team every now and then, when he’s averaging at least three touchdown passes a week.
In terms of help, yes — Patrick Mahomes has an offensive guru in Andy Reid, and weapons like Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Kareem Hunt (yikes).
But Sean Payton is LITERALLY one of the best offensive coaches in football. Having Michael Thomas to throw to and Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara in the backfield ain’t bad either…
Honestly, in terms of weapons surrounding them, I’d say it’s equal. Especially now with Spencer Ware being the Chiefs starting RB.
Patrick Mahomes has only lost to Tom Brady and Jared Goff.
Drew Brees lost to Ryan Fitzpatrick and Dak Prescott.
Dirk Koetter and Jason Garrett anyone? I don’t care how good that Cowboys defence is, Mahomes puts more than 10 on them.
Patrick Mahomes is the real MVP. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
(This article may or may not be biased based on the fact that I bet on Mahomes winning MVP at +4400 before the season)
