It was a wild week in college basketball. We saw nine top-25 teams go down in a span of seven days.
We are starting to see who the best teams are. Kentucky is one of the hottest teams in the country and both Michigan State and Michigan suffered crushing losses.
Let’s recap the week and look at the newest AP Top 25 poll.
For now, Duke and Tennessee are without question the best teams in college basketball. I’m not a huge fan of Tennessee, but it’s nice to see a team other than Kentucky be atop the SEC and in the top 5.
I hate Duke. Hate everything about them. But, they are really, really good, which makes this season a bit hard for me. Tennessee remains atop the rankings while the Blue Devils sit one spot below them at #2, again.
Michigan and Michigan State both suffered bad losses this weekend. First, it was the fifth ranked Michigan Wolverines losing by 15 at Iowa. They shot just 32% from the field.
All the Spartans had to do to jump to #1 in the Big Ten standings was take care of Indiana at home, who had lost 7 straight games. Apparently this was too much to ask as the Spartans shot 8-22 from the free throw line and lost to the Hoosiers in overtime.
Michigan only dropped two spots, which I can understand since the game was at Iowa, but how does Michigan State remain in the top 10? You can’t lose to a bottom-tier Big Ten team at home in OT and drop only 3 spots.
Kansas is overrated and still somehow remains in the top 15. Sorry Jawhawk fans, but you do not deserve a top ranking. I know you beat Texas Tech at home, but you have also lost to Texas (unranked), Kentucky, and West Virginia (10-12).
Why are they still in the top 15? Because Bill Self gets a pass every year. The Jawhawks could win zero games and still be a 2 seed in the tournament.
They’re nothing without Azubuike and De Sousa.
Kentucky wins eight straight and climbs into the top 5. Tennessee and Duke are #1 and #2, but you could then make a strong case for Kentucky at #3. The Cats are the hottest team in college basketball and it isn’t close.
Their last loss was almost a month ago to Alabama and the Cats dropped to #18. They have been on a roll since and have slowly moved into the top 5.
