Congrats to the Toronto Raptors and the entire country of Canada. They are officially relevant in the world of basketball. Also a special congratulations to the finals MVP and renowned dynasty killer Kawhi Leonard.
Perhaps one of the less talked about players in the league simply because he isn’t very outspoken. Even though this man took down the big 3 Miami heat dynasty, and now the Golden State dynasty. He still doesn’t seem to get the respect many feel he deserves.
That being said, it is now time for Leonard to make one of the biggest decisions of his career. Where to? He is now an official free agent after opting out of the final year of his deal with Toronto.
If you have been following the situation, then you know that his decision is essentially down to two teams; the Raptors or the Clippers.
A classic case of “head vs heart”. Kawhi’s head is telling him to stay in Toronto. This city has embraced him more than any other player they’ve ever had. So much so that when you think of the Raptors now, the player you attach to that franchise is him. Not Vince Carter or Tracy McGrady.
Toronto will build a statue of this man if he re-signs with them. He will be handed the keys to the city, and he could ride out the rest of his career as the face of Canadian basketball.
However Kawhi’s heart is telling him something different. His heart is telling him to return home to southern California. Originally from Riverside, Kawhi could choose to do what other great players have done in the past. To play in the area where you grew up. Be closer to family and friends, and potentially bring a championship to other team in LA that plays in the staples center.
NBA free agency begins on June 30th. Stay tuned to see which route Leonard chooses. He turns 28 years old the day before free agency begins.
